TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DIVISION
MEMORANDUM
TO: Charles Soules, Director of Public Works
FROM: David Woosley, Transportation/Traffic Engineer
DATE: 14 March 2007
SUBJECT: Traffic Safety Commission, March 5, 2007
Oak Tree Drive & Vantuyl Drive
Agenda Item No. 5
At the March 5, 2007 Traffic Safety Commission meeting, the commission heard a request to establish NO PARKING along the west side of Oak Tree Drive adjacent to the school crosswalk at Vantuyl Drive. It is desirable to provide 100 feet of NO PARKING in advance of crosswalks which translates to 80 feet north and 105 feet south of Oak Tree Drive in order to place the signs between properties.
Paulette Strong, the Principal of Quail Run School, advised that there are 40-60 children who cross at the crosswalk daily. School staff is posted at the intersection to advise students when it is safe to cross; however, parents picking-up students park right up to the crosswalk restricting the view of oncoming traffic. Paula O’Callaghan, 1109 Oak Tree Drive, stated that she was opposed to the request because people coming to her home wouldn’t be able park in front of her house. They use the street a lot during bad weather because sometimes they can’t get up their driveway. This request would be a real inconvenience.
The commission voted 6-1 to recommend approval of the request, but only on school days MTThF 3:30-4:00PM and W 2:00-2:30PM; Commissioner Woods felt the restriction would be inconsistent.
