Historic Preservation Fund Grants
Introduction/Discussion
The Kansas State Historic Preservation Office (KHPO), a division of the Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS), administers the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) to finance activities that will contribute to planning for the preservation of our built environment and archeological resources. Up to sixty percent of the cost of eligible activities can be funded through this program. All projects must be within the physical boundaries of Certified Local Governments (CLG). The following projects have been awarded to the City of Lawrence.
Revision of the Downtown Design Guidelines, HPF Grant #20-06-21519-005
This grant will provide for public meetings and the needed revision of the existing document by a qualified consultant. The project agreement for this project has been executed by the City and the KSHS. An RFP must now be published to hire a professional consultant to revise the guidelines.

South Massachusetts Street Survey, HPF Grant # 20-07-21620-004
This grant will provide a historic resources survey for the area of Massachusetts Street located between South Park and 23rd Street. The project agreement requires the City Manager’s signature and an RFP must be published to hire a qualified consultant to complete the project.

Design Review Intern, HPF Grant # 20-07-21620-003
This grant provides the salary for the Design Review Intern. The Design Review Intern assists the Historic Resources Administrator with operational activities such as state law reviews, local reviews, preparing reports and presentations, and record keeping. The intern works 25 hours per week for 52 weeks. The project agreement requires the City Manager’s signature. The position will be filled by the City’s Personnel Department.

Project Funding The Historic Preservation Fund is a grant program funded by the National Park Service of the Department of the Interior. The funds are passed through the Kansas Historic Preservation Office to local governments and organizations to pay for historic preservation activities on the local level. KHPO provides 60% of the project cost and the City of Lawrence will provide 40% of project costs in cash and matching. The cash match associated with each grant is included in the Historic Resources portion of the Planning Department budget.
