WHEREAS: The second oldest parent cooperative preschool in the nation, the Lawrence Community Nursery School, founded in 1948, was established by a group of mothers who attended a conference on preschool play offered by the University Extension School sponsored by the Lawrence League for the Practice of Democracy; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Community Nursery School was developed through three principles – that the school must be a parent cooperative, integrated both racially and religiously, and offered at a low cost – which are still being practiced today; and
WHEREAS: With community support, the Lawrence Community Nursery School purchased the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1956 and has called it “home” since 1957; and
WHEREAS: The Lawrence Community Nursery School has become a fixture in the Old West Lawrence Neighborhood with its school barn red and white trim colors providing children with a loving preschool experience for the past fifty years;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sue Hack, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby recognize the 50th Anniversary of the Lawrence Community Nursery School at the Little Red Schoolhouse, 645 Alabama Street.
