Mike Cheek celebrates 40 years with the City of Lawrence

On April 11, 2007 Mike Cheek celebrated his 40th year of service to the City of Lawrence. Mike began his career in 1967 as a laborer in the Solid Waste Division. He has held every position in the department to his current title of Solid Waste Supervisor. Mike is responsible for the daily operations for Solid Waste collection and directly supervises a staff and crew of 85 employees. Mike also manages operations for the collection and processing of compost and recyclables, prepares specifications for new equipment, resolves citizen complaints, and establishes and ensures accuracy of commercial accounts.

 

Mike is a veteran of the Army. He and wife, Carol, have been married 36 years, have two children (Michelle and Chris) and 3 grandchildren. Mike raises cattle, enjoys do-it-yourself projects, hunting and fishing.

 

Mike received the 2005 Excellence in Public Works Field Supervision Award from the Kansas Chapter of American Public Works Association (APWA).  The Public Works staff is proud of Mike’s accomplishments and many years of service to the community.

 

 

Update on Kasold construction

Paving has begun on the west side of the Kasold South project. The retaining wall, storm sewer, water main, sub grade and underdrain system are complete. Please see attached photos of the project.

 

Update on Burroughs Creek Trail/Park project

A public meeting was held on April 4 to introduce neighborhood residents to the project and gather their input for incorporation into the preliminary phases of design. Bartlett & West has reviewed the comments gathered during the meeting and has formulated initial plans for trail route, trail connections, trailhead layout options, property acquisition recommendations and other aspects of the project. The site topographic survey is being drafted and will be completed in the near future. Submission of the initial site plan is planned for May 2007.
