Lawrence, Kansas
WHEREAS: The United States celebrates Earth Day on April 22, 2007 and encourages all citizens to conserve natural resources, reduce waste, and live more sustainably; and
WHEREAS: The City of Lawrence has joined communities across the United States in signing the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement; and
WHEREAS: All City departments strive to conserve energy and reduce waste in order to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, our reliance on fossil fuels, and our dependence on foreign oil; and
WHEREAS: 3% of the electricity used in municipal operations is offset with renewable energy from sources including low-impact hydro-electric power and wind power through the purchase of Zephyr Energy Green Tags; and
WHEREAS: The City of Lawrence joins the EPA in signing a Green Power Partnership Agreement and launches a Green Power Community Campaign with a goal that 2% of all electricity usage city-wide be offset with renewable energy by the end of 2007.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sue Hack, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of April 15 – 21, 2007, to be
and urge all citizens to conserve energy, reduce waste, and consider the purchase of renewable energy through the purchase of renewable energy credits (REC’s or Green Tags).
