RESIDENTIAL TRASH CARTS, RECYCLING CARTS

Public Works Solid Waste requests approval for the purchase of residential trash carts in the total amount of $22,548.  The purchase includes:

· 358  Residential carts ($49.75 each)

· 50    Recycling carts ($49.75 each)

· Hot stamp for carts ($250)

· 408  Special Axles ($ 1 each)

· Freight ($1592)

Trash carts are subject to evaluation based on compatibility with solid waste equipment, durability, and costs.  Carts are standardized to provide serviceability on routes because the cart dumping mechanisms cannot be adjusted from stop to stop.  In addition, standardization is more efficient for maintenance operations.  The Americart 3190 has been selected as the standard residential cart.  The sole source form for the carts is attached.

Freight costs are a significant component of cart purchases.  The freight cost is $1592 for this purchase, regardless of total number purchased, up to a full truckload.  For this reason, the division orders a full truckload at a time.
