Statement of Individual Respect
“Diversity - What Have We Learned...?”
Purpose: With the approval of the City Manager, all Departments will hold 30 to 45 minute Diversity sessions that cover essential elements of the City of Lawrence’s Statement of Individual Respect. For the 2006 Diversity Training, the City achieved 100% employee attendance; likewise, the City Manager expects 100% employee attendance for the 2007 Diversity Training.
The goals of the Diversity sessions are to ensure:
§ All City of Lawrence Supervisors and Employees know and understand both their rights and their responsibilities as outlined in the Statement of Individual Respect.
§ All City Employees know what to do, and with whom to talk, if they encounter a work situation that may involve a violation of the City of Lawrence Statement of Individual Respect.
§ The City of Lawrence has exercised due diligence to carry out its responsibility to inform all employees about Federal, State and local laws and policies regarding Equal Opportunity Employment, Non-Discrimination, and Sexual Harassment.
2007 Diversity Training Format:
§ Each Department will conduct its own Diversity information sessions.
§ Each Department will schedule their employees on the dates and at the times that best fit the Department’s work schedules.
§ Each Department will develop a calendar showing the dates, times and locations for all of their Diversity Sessions, and will send a copy of the Department calendar to Myra Greenberg, Leadership and Employee Development, Department of Administrative Services.
§ The Department calendars will be combined, and a City-Wide calendar of Diversity Sessions will be posted on the City of Lawrence Intranet. If an employee is unable to attend a Diversity session hosted by their own Department, they may attend a session sponsored by another City Department.
§ Each Department will identify and select an appropriate and sufficient number of employees to be trained to deliver the Diversity information sessions.
Ø Department Trainers can be Supervisory or non-Supervisory staff.
Ø Using two Department Trainers to conduct a session for larger employee groups is recommended.
Ø Employees wanting to develop their meeting facilitation skills may choose to team up with another of their Department’s Trainers for the sessions they will lead.
§ Smaller Departments may choose to join together and collaborate for their Diversity Sessions and Department Trainer selection.
NOTE: If your Department will be joining with one or more other Departments to conduct your Diversity session, please inform the Director of Administrative Services.
§ “Train-the-Trainer” sessions will be held for all staff selected to be Department Trainers. This will assure that Department Trainers are familiar with the material to be covered in the session, including leading the discussion and conducting any activities. There will be multiple options for presenting the session materials to allow for various facilitation styles.
§ Each Department Trainer will be provided with a packet of materials that will include the Master Copies for the following:
aAttendance “Sign-In” Sheet |
aTrainer’s Outline for the session |
aCertification form for each employee attending |
aAny handout materials |
aSession Feedback Form |

Attendance Reporting:
§ After each Diversity session, Departments will send the original session “Attendance Sheets” and all Employee Certification forms to Myra Greenberg, Leadership and Employee Development, Department of Administrative Services so that attendance can be tracked and compliance monitored.
§ All Department Diversity Sessions should be completed by April 13, 2007.
§ Final Department Attendance Sheets and Employee Certification forms should be submitted to Myra Greenberg, Leadership and Employee Development, Department of Administrative Services no later than April 20, 2007.
