Mayor Mike Amyx

City of Lawrence

4th Floor, City Hall

Lawrence, KS

Dear Mike:

Please place the on the January 23 Lawrence City Commission’s agenda, the request to approve the proposal for the 2007 USA Cycling Collegiate Road Championship criterium race. The proposal already has been approved by Downtown Lawrence Incorporated and has been scrutinized and approved by the Lawrence Public Safety Committee. We request the Lawrence City Commissioners approve closing sections of downtown on Sunday, May 13, 2007 for USA Cycling’s Collegiate Road Championship’s criterium race. The local organizing committee plans to use last year’s route because the members feel it accomplished our desired goals. They were:

1)       Open up as much of Vermont Street to accommodate church parking near 10th and Vermont and for customers coming downtown

2)       Open up the intersection of 7th and New Hampshire

3)       Create a race route that is more spectator friendly

Last year the City of Lawrence hosted over 400 collegiate cyclists from 95 Universities around the United States, generating a total direct spending of $350,000 into the Lawrence economy.

Attached you will find informational sheets about the event that should aid you and your fellow commissioners in their decision. Thank you for considering our request.
