Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:       The American Association of University Women was founded  on November 28, 1881 and is one of the oldest existing organizations dedicated to promoting education and equity of women and girls; and

WHEREAS:       The American Association of University Women promotes excellence in academia for women through the improvement of schools, communities, and fields of work for the benefit of all; and

WHEREAS:       The American Association of University Women’s Educational Foundation awards nearly $4 million annually in grants and fellowships to women pursuing degrees in higher education; and

WHEREAS:       The American Association of University Women celebrates its 125^th anniversary on November 28, 2006; and

WHEREAS:       The Lawrence Branch of AAUW advances the American Association of University Women’s 125 year legacy of leadership on behalf of women and girls in Kansas and Lawrence;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, November 28, 2006 to be

“AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN DAY”

And urge all citizens of Lawrence to recognize the value of education and an equitable society, and the laudable work of the American Association of University Women.
