KDHE Information Update
September 28, 2006
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is continuing remediation of the 9th and Louisiana site in Lawrence. Below is an update on the most recent remediation activities at the site:
· The soil vapor extraction trailer at this location is removing residual soil contamination.
· The replacement of trees and grass along the curb cut is planned. Planting was postponed until the fall season so that the weather would be more suitable.
· The water treatment system is operating effectively.
· The soil vapor extraction system at this location is operating effectively.
Both remediation systems have recently been reviewed for engineering standards and will have slight modifications to enhance operation. In order to expedite the water extraction and water treatment operations and in order to improve the safety and efficiency of the waste storage and handling operations, KDHE has requested permission from the City of Lawrence to place a temporary above ground storage tank adjacent to the existing, temporary water treatment building. The storage tank will be a cylindrical, double-walled, carbon steel, fuel storage tank, approximately four and a half feet in diameter and approximately twelve feet in length. It will be enclosed in a six foot wood privacy fence with a locking gate. If you have questions, please call KDHE’s District Office at (785) 842-4600
