Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:       The Arc of Douglas County was established in 1956 by nine families who wanted better educational opportunities for their children with mental retardation; and

 

WHEREAS:       The advocacy of The Arc of Douglas County had aided in the passage of both state and  federal laws that assure people with developmental disabilities receive the education and support services they need to be fully included in the Lawrence community; and

 

WHEREAS:       The Arc of Douglas County was instrumental in starting recreational and vocational services for people with developmental disabilities in Douglas County: and

  

WHEREAS:       In 2000, the Arc of Douglas County began offering service coordination to children and adults with developmental disabilities in Douglas County and surrounding counties, and today is currently serving over fifty adults and children as their personal service coordinator; and

 

WHEREAS:       The Arc of Douglas County celebrates its fiftieth anniversary with the same mission as when it was first founded…to provide advocacy, education, and leadership to empower and support individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to live and belong in the community;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Thursday August 24 as

 

“THE ARC OF DOUGLAS COUNTY 50TH ANNIVERSARY”
