Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

 

 

WHEREAS:   Sixteen years ago the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted to provide a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against people with disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS:   The Americans with Disabilities Act made the law of the land, the premise that every person with a disability has the right to live independently and participate in all aspects of community life; and

 

WHEREAS:   As we mark this anniversary, we celebrate in particular the growing awareness among employers that there are many qualified individuals with disabilities who prove to be very capable, dependable, valued, hardworking employees; and

 

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence, Kansas continues to demonstrate it’s leadership and commitment to the spirit and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act through the public education and enforcement work of the Lawrence Human Relations / Human Resources Department, Neighborhood Resources Department, and other City of Lawrence services and programs; and

 

WHEREAS:   Today we call upon people with disabilities, public officials, business leaders and all Americans to pursue the ADA's full promise of equal opportunity, and to celebrate the expanded freedom the ADA has brought to our lives;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim July 26, 2006 to be

 

“THE CITY OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS CELEBRATION OF THE

 16TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE

 AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT”
