Lawrence City Commissioners,

In this letter, the Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which currently represents a component of the Traffic Safety Commission, wishes to express its desire for the City Commission to recognize the committee as an advisory board to the City Commission.

In May of 2005, the Traffic Safety Commission unanimously supported authorizing a Pedestrian Advisory Committee.  Two Traffic Safety Commissioners were nominated to cochair and form the Pedestrian Advisory Committee.  Since that time the committee has held monthly meetings to discuss pedestrian safety and walkability issues in Lawrence.  To demonstrate the Pedestrian Advisory Committee’s activity, we are attaching electronically copies of the committee’s meeting agendas and meeting minutes since the committee’s inception.  Numerous members of the community have attended our meetings, including a core of regular attendees who are dedicated to pedestrian issues.

With its current relationship with Traffic Safety Commission, the Pedestrian Advisory Committee has contributed well to efforts at addressing pedestrian issues in Lawrence.  However, the current members of the committee believe that pedestrian issues in Lawrence deserve greater attention within the city government.  In particular, the current members respectfully request that the City Commission recognize the Pedestrian Advisory Committee as an advisory board to the City Commission.  For your consideration, we request that this issue be placed on the City Commission’s agenda at its meeting on Tuesday, July 25.

If the City Commission has any questions or concerns regarding this request, please contact Dietrich Earnhart by phone at 865-2491 or by postal mail at the mailing address shown above.

Thank you in advance for your consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,
Dietrich H. Earnhart
(member of the Pedestrian Advisory Committee)
