SUBJECT:     Fireworks Responses

 

The following is a summary of fireworks related incidents that we responded to July 3 and 4.  As you can see there were a number of “approved fireworks” related responses.  One response was made to a serious head injury.  Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything further.

 

July 3, 2006

101 Windsor Place – Incident dispatched as a grass fire.  On arrival located a small fire in the rear of the residence.  Obvious ignition of approved fireworks in a combustible yard area.  

 

1130 Inverness, Adjacent to Quail Run School – Incident dispatched as a grass fire.  On arrival located a grass fire near the school.  No structural damage reported.  Investigation:  Obvious ignition of approved fireworks in a combustible yard area.

 

110 North Michigan - Incident dispatched as a grass fire.  On arrival located a large grass/brush fire which was on the perimeter of a large open grass area in the east end of the trailer park.  LPD initially advised that fire was potentially endangering structures, but no structures were endangered or involved.  Fire area was overhauled, mostly brushes and logs.  Investigation:  No fireworks devices were found in immediate fire area.  The adjacent areas did have spent fireworks remnants.  No one in the area admitted to knowing how fire started, or having set off fireworks.

 


2000 CR 1045 - Incident dispatched as a grass fire. Arrived on scene (Grant Township) and reported a small grass fire adjacent to Hwy 24, just east of Midland Junction.  Investigation: Found incendiary device, “Desert Smoke” brand smoke bomb, in burn area. No person(s) in area, unknown origin of device.

 

11th and Connecticut - Incident dispatched as structure fire.  Arrived on scene of a 2 story detached garage, and observed LPD attempting to extinguish small exterior fire with DryChem Extinguisher.  Extinguished remaining fire with water can, and overhauled fire area of structure.  Investigation:  several fireworks “smoke-bombs” were observed in area of origin.  Occupants at adjacent house admitted to setting off smoke bombs.

 

824 Delaware – Incident dispatched as a structure fire.  Arrived to find a brush/grass fire behind the residence.  Investigation:  Obvious ignition from use of approved fireworks.  No structural damage.

 

1136 Louisiana – Incident dispatched as a couch on fire.  Arrived to find a smoldering couch outside the residence.  Investigation:  Obvious ignition from use of approved fireworks.  No structural damage.

 

 

July 4, 2006

 

1800 N 1450 Rd, Pine Fireworks Tent – Responded to a medical call involving a fireworks injury.  On arrival found a patient with a serious head injury that was flown to a Level 1 Trauma Center in Kansas City by Air Ambulance.  Investigation:  Conducted by Douglas County Sheriffs Department.  Patient was struck in the head (eye) by an aerial device.
