SUBJECT:     KDOT ITS Set-Aside Application

The Kansas Department of Transportation has advised us that the deadline for submittal of project applications for the FY2009 ITS Set-Aside program is June 9, 2006.  The 2009 program has $2,000,000 available state-wide for use by the state, counties and cities.

ITS uses electronics, computers, sensors, communications, and management strategies to improve roadway safety and transportation system efficiency.  The goal of the ITS Set-Aside Program is to promote ITS within the state by funding research, and technology applications.

The project we propose would consist of the Installation of fiber optic cable, modems and central control hardware/software to develop a closed-loop traffic signal system to monitor and optimize traffic flow along U.S. 40-59 (6th Street) Massachusetts Street and Iowa Street.  All the traffic signals in this corridor have had the controllers upgraded and interconnect conduit already in place.  The central signal system control would be installed in the Traffic Engineering Offices at 445 Mississippi Street, one block north of the project corridor.  The central system control would be capable of eventually linking with all traffic signals in the city.

The estimated cost of this project is $500,000, including $50,000 for design, and it is proposed that the city would provide 50% of the funding.
