Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   Communities across America will celebrate the month of May as Bicycle Safety Month for the 50^th consecutive year in 2006; and

WHEREAS:   Each year, the Governor declares Kansas Kids Fitness Day on May 5^th; and

WHEREAS:   The Douglas County Safe KIDS Coalition conducts safety events in honor of National SAFE KIDS week; and

WHEREAS:   Many of the bike related activities during the month of May are initiated cooperatively between citizens and public service organizations; and

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence seeks to form symbiotic partnerships with organizations to promote bicycle awareness and education through the Bicycle Work Program; and

WHEREAS:   The month of May provides several opportunities to create partnerships that increase awareness of bicycle safety issues;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2006 to be

“BICYCLE SAFETY MONTH”

and the week of May 14^th to 20^th, 2006 as

“Bike-To-Work Week”

in the City of Lawrence.
