WHEREAS: Founded in 1889, the National Association of Letter Carriers is the union of city letter carriers employed by the United States Postal Service; and
WHEREAS: The National Association of Letter Carriers National Food Drive is the outgrowth of tradition of community service exhibited repeatedly by members of the letter carriers union over the years; and
WHEREAS: On the second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than ten thousand cities and towns across America will collect boxes or cans of non-perishable food items that citizens have placed in or next to their mailboxes; and
WHEREAS: In 2005, the drive collected a record 71,000,000 pounds of food from postal customers with 20,000 pounds collected locally by Lawrence letter carriers;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mike Amyx, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 13, 2006 to be the
in Lawrence and urge the citizens of Lawrence and Douglas County to participate by leaving non-perishable food items next to your mailboxes on Saturday.
