RE:	March 28, 2006 Agenda Item KTA - N. Iowa and Michigan Street Bridges Pedestrian/Bicycle Facilities

At the City Commission Study Session on March 9, 2006 Staff presented that the KTA will reconstruct the bridges over I-70 at Iowa Street and North Michigan.  The KTA has requested the City’s direction on providing additional pedestrian/bicycle facilities to the proposed bridge section.

The KTA has proposed to construct a 6’ sidewalk on the east side of the Iowa Street bridge, and bike lanes on the N. Michigan bridge, but no sidewalks.  The Commission discussed the need for a sidewalk on at least one side of the N. Michigan Bridge.  The additional cost is estimated at $180,000.  Additional improvements/facilities to the proposed Iowa Street crossing were not necessary.

Upon review of the area, staff would recommend the sidewalk on N. Michigan be placed on the west side.

Action Requested:  Approve the addition of a 6’ sidewalk to the N. Michigan Street bridge over the KTA on the west side, and direct staff to prepare an inner-local agreement with KTA for the additional scope of work/construction costs.
