Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   The Lawrence Public Library, the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library, the Lawrence Public Schools, and Lawrence citizens support and promote literacy; and

WHEREAS:   For seven years, the above agencies and citizens have supported Read Across Lawrence, a program to encourage all Lawrence residents to read the same book at the same time and gather to discuss it; and

WHEREAS:   The 2006 book selection is “The Center of Everything” by KU graduate and Lawrence resident Laura Moriarty; and

WHEREAS:   This book relates the coming-of-age of a young girl growing up in a fictional small Kansas town, and coming to terms with the world and her place in it; and

WHEREAS:   Numerous copies of this book are available at the Lawrence Public Library and throughout the city;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dennis “Boog” Highberger, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim February 27 – April 28, 2006 to be

“READ ACROSS LAWRENCE WEEKS”

and encourage all residents to read and participate in one or more public discussions and events about this charming novel by our local author, Laura Moriarty.
