January 24, 2006 Agenda Items
|
Please include the following items on the City Commission agenda for consideration at the January 24th meeting:
Landmark Nominations for 702 E. 11th Street (Hobbs Park), 1839 Massachusetts Street (Fire Station #2), and 2819 Stone Barn Terrace (Grover Barn) to the Lawrence Register of Historic Places
At their meeting on November 17 , 2005, the Lawrence Historic Resources Commission (HRC) passed Resolutions 2005-02, 2005-3, and 2005-4 recommending designation of Hobbs Park, Fire Station #2, and Grover Barn, as Landmarks on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places.
Project History All three properties under consideration for Landmark status on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places are owned by the City of Lawrence. The HRC requested that staff research and prepare nominations and environs analyses for the properties. The final nominations and environs definitions were approved by the HRC on November 17, 2005.
Project Status Chapter 22 of the Code of the City of Lawrence requires the City Commission to consider the application of a landmark nomination at a public hearing. The public hearing may be during a regularly scheduled meeting. The City Commission may approve an ordinance designating a nominated structure as a landmark in accordance with the findings of the HRC. The City Commission may also authorize submittal of an application to nominate the proposed landmark for listing on the State or National Registers of Historic Places.
If the City Commission denies the nomination, subsequent nomination attempts shall not occur within three years, or without a change of ownership of the property, whichever occurs first.
Action Request Planning staff requests the City Commission hold a public hearing and direct staff to draft ordinances for landmark designation for 702 E. 11th Street (Hobbs Park), 1839 Massachusetts Street (Fire Station #2), and 2819 Stone Barn Terrace (Grover Barn), if appropriate. In addition, Staff recommends the City Commission authorize the submittal of an application to nominate 1839 Massachusetts (Fire Station #2) for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
