RE:

Amendment to Ordinance No. 7960 - Camping

In the most recent meeting of the Community Commission on Homelessness, members considered the issues of the Lawrence Community Shelter use permit and the amendment to the city’s current camping ordinance (no. 7960).

After hearing extensive comment from the 14 members of the public present and after group discussion, the CCH voted unanimously (see formal motion below) to oppose this particular ordinance amendment. The CCH asks that the City Commission reconsider support of the ordinance, which is very narrow in scope and does not contribute to solving the greater community problem of homelessness.

Furthermore the CCH asks that, in the spirit of the Task Force on Homeless Services recommendations, future issues pertaining to homelessness be referred to the CCH first for review and comment so that an appropriate response that reflects the interests of the entire community may be forwarded to the City Commission.

“Taliaferro moved that the Community Commission on Homelessness oppose using this ordinance amendment, which is very narrow in scope and does not contribute to solving the greater community problem of homelessness.  In the future, in the spirit of the TF recommendations the CCH would like such issues referred to the group first for review and comment so that an appropriate response that reflects the interests of the entire community may be forwarded to the CC. Martin-Smith seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
