Office of the Mayor

Proclamation

Lawrence, Kansas

WHEREAS:   There is value in rededicating ourselves to the truths that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. strove for and thereby there is value in setting aside a day or days for the recalling of the legacy he left us; and

WHEREAS:   Patriotic celebrations renew our citizenship and to express our faith in what can be done within our system of government and provide us an opportunity to recognize liberties possible in the United States; and

WHEREAS:   In 1958, the Reverend Dr. King inspired the nation and the world station:  “Our hope for creative living lies in our ability to re-establish the spiritual ends of our lives in personal character and social justice.  Without this spiritual and moral reawakening we shall destroy ourselves in the misuse of our own instruments.  Our generation cannot escape the question of our Lord; What shall it profit a man, if he gains the whole world of externals – airplanes, electric lights, automobiles, and color television – and lose the internal – his own soul?” It is 2006 and there have been new generations coming along but for all of us together, Dr. King’s call is one that still resonates.

WHEREAS:   The City of Lawrence, USD #497, Haskell Indian Nations University, the University of Kansas, along with other community institutions, are all cooperating to support the activities planned for the 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration and urge local residents to take part in them;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dennis “Boog” Highberger, Mayor of the City of Lawrence, Kansas, do hereby proclaim January 9 – 16, 2006 to be

“MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WEEK.”
