CALL TO ORDER

 

The monthly meeting of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Board was held Monday,

September 19, 2005.  Chair Donna Bell called the meeting to order.

 

 

MINUTES

 

Gladys Sanders moved that the August Health Board minutes be approved.  Carl McElwee provided the second and the motion passed.

 

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

 

Donna Bell reported on the meeting with Mayor Boog Highberger, City Commissioner Mike Rundle, City Manager Mike Wildgen, and Assistant City Manager Debbie Van Saun on August 24, 2005.  The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the City budget process.  Kay Kent and Charlotte Marthaler also attended.

 

ACTIVITY AND FINANCIAL/VOUCHER REPORTS

 

Tom Liebl moved that the Board accept the financial and activity reports for July.  Sherri Vaughn provided the second and the motion passed.

 

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

2004 Audit Report

 

Cheryl Saladin reviewed the Health Department’s portion of the 2004 Douglas County Audit Report.  Sherri Vaughn moved that the Board accept the 2004 Audit Report.  Gladys Sanders provided the second and the motion passed.

 

Director’s Report

 

1.      Kay informed the Board that Nancy Jorn has been asked to sit on the national Health and Social Justice Advisory Committee of the National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO).

 

2.      Kay reported that the Health Department has received notice that the WIC funding for the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will continue into next year.

 

3.      Kay informed the Board that three open positions were recently filled: Heather Anderson, RN accepted the Staff Nurse position, effective September 12, 2005; Diane Evert accepted

 

the Child Care Licensing Surveyor position, effective September 19, 2005; and Maria Ana Garza, RN accepted the PPS/TIP Case Manager position, also effective September 19, 2005. 

 

4.      Cynthia Oshel, Secretary II, resigned effective September 30, 2005.  Advertising for the position has begun.

 

5.      Kay Kent reported on the flu immunization program for 2005.  Following the CDC guidelines, the Health Department will begin the flu program in early October with the goal of administering flu shots to all high-risk groups in the community before October 24.  The Health Department is also working on plans for a clinic to be held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds sometime in October, followed by additional smaller clinics to be held as needed.  Kay reported that the cost of vaccine has increased again and therefore, she recommended that the Health Department’s charge for the vaccination be increased to $20 for adults and $15 for children to cover this additional cost.  By consensus of the Board the fee increases were approved.

 

Other New Business

 

1.      By consensus, the Board authorized Chair Donna Bell to sign the September 1, 2005-August 31, 2006 Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response grant in the amount of $113,567.   

 

2.      The Board signed a letter of recognition for Marilyn “Micky” Stoppel congratulating her for her twenty-five years of service with the Health Department.

 

3.      The next Health Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 17, 2005.

The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Sherri Vaughn and a second by Gladys Sanders.
