Introduction

Over the past few months, the local organizing committee for the National Collegiate Cycling Association Road National Championships has been hard at work securing Lawrence as the host city.  Lawrence and the KU Cycling Club will play host for the 2005, 2006, and 2007 National Collegiate Cycling Association Road National Championships.  In 2005, the event will be held May 13-15, and will bring in more than 350 athletes from more than 100 schools.  Numerous spectators and team supporters will come to the event, bringing in an estimated $300,000 in overall economic activity to Lawrence over the second weekend of May.

The event itself is a three-day, three-race championship where an individual national champion for men’s and women’s as well as a team national champion will be crowned.  One of the events is a criterium, a short loop around 1-1.5 miles in length that athletes compete on for around an hour.  The local organizing committee hopes the criterium can be held in Downtown Lawrence on Friday May 13, 2005.

What is the Mass Street Criterium?

This challenging race occurs on a one-mile course with six wide turns that will test the legs of each cyclist to the fullest extent.  Criterium is French for the word “circuit,” thus the style of racing.  The riders in this event will race the one-mile circuit for 70 minutes; once the 70 minutes have expired, the rider who has covered the most distance in that time is declared the winner.  This type of racing is the most exciting to watch and the most spectator-friendly of all the cycling disciplines.
