The Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Celebration is the first event of the New Year to be held in
the City of Lawrence.  The purpose of the MLK Celebration is to bring our community together
not only to honor a great American Leader, but to also challenge us as a community.  Although
great progress has been made in our community and the nation, we still have much work
to do to realize Dr. King's Dream.
This funding request is for the MLK annual operating funds which will support the following programs during the
2005 MLK Celebration:

The MLK Planning Committee's recommended funding requests, are listed below and prioritized:
Priority 1:$10,000 for speakers fees.  Our research shows that to schedule a Nationally known Speaker the cost  can range from
$20,000 to over $40,000.  In 2005, we will be hosting  our 20th Year MLK Celebration for the Lawrence Community.
Priority 2:$3,000 Printing for brochures, posters and advertisement costs.  We seek to ensure all segments of the community
have the information needed to attend all MLK events.    In that effort we must promote the MLK Celebration.
Priority 3:$2,500 for costs associate with hosting the MLK Musical: guest music director honorariums, guest musicians honorariums
and travel cost/ room and board.  Support of MLK Youth and Adult Choirs with a guest director.
Priority 4:$5,000 for Banquet cost.  In observance of the 20th MLK Anniversary Celebration, we are seeking to host the banquet
at no cost to guests or minimal cost.  In past years, we sold tickets to help defray the banquet cost.
Priority 5:$5,000 Commemorative Service costs  -- Rental of Lied Center.  Ku provides approximately $2,800 in-kind support.
The commemorative service features a speaker who has either been with Dr. King during the struggle or someone who has
experience to help Lawrence appreciate and respect all people.
Priority 6: $5,000 Community Juneteenth Celebration cost.  We hope to help support and sponsor the Juneteenth Celebration in-
conjunction with the Juneteenth Planning Committee and The Lawrence Boys & Girls Club.  Family Day - Concert Series, oral history
3 on 3 tournament; essay and history lessons for youth concerning Juneteenth. Bridging the connection from emancipation to civil
rights.

arts program in conjunction with USD 497.
