MEMORANDUM

TO:                  Dave Corliss

THRU: Victor Torres

FROM:            Barry Walthall

SUBJECT:     2002 National Electrical Code/International Codes

DATE:                        March 22, 2004

The Board of Electrical Examiners and Appeals met on February 4 to finalize discussions on the 2002 National Electrical Code (NEC).  One member was absent from the meeting and there was one vacancy resulting in a 5-0 vote to recommend the adoption of the 2002 National Electrical Code.  A listing of significant changes identified in the review process between the 1999 edition and the 2003 edition of the code is attached, along with the approved minutes of the February 4, 2004 meeting of the Board of Electrical Examiners and Appeals.

The National Electrical Code, published by the National Fire Protection Agency, is the only nationally recognized electrical code in the United States and is adopted by virtually every jurisdiction in the country.  The NFPA also publishes, under contract with the International Code Council, the electrical code provisions contained within the International Residential Code.  Because the NEC is referenced by both model building code sets, the International Code Council and the NFPA, the adoption of the 2002 NEC will not conflict with the outgoing work of the Code Review Committee to review model code organizations and recommend adoption of a single code set to the Commission.

Let me know if you have any questions or need more information regarding the 2002 National Electrical Code adoption.
