December 9, 2003
Board members present, Chair Tom Bracciano, Vice Chair Alice Ann Johnston, Richard Konzem, Sharon Spratt and Bill Penny. Staff present, Fred DeVictor, Ernie Shaw, Mark Hecker, Roger Steinbrock.
Meeting brought to order by Chair Bracciano. Minutes of the November 11th meeting approved on a motion by Konzem, 2nd by Johnston.
Board members inquired about the Journal World article about City-County parks consolidation and the new growth area expansion. Staff reported there has been little discussion about City-County parks combining but would listen if asked. Staff already has discussed the need to pursue additional park sites in the urban growth area.
DeVictor reported the City Commission had approved the 6th and Massachusetts site for a new sculpture and an agreement had been signed with Landplan Engineering for designing the Sesquicentennial Plaza at Clinton Lake leased property.
Roger reported we received about $1,600 from the first Chili Feed for our youth scholarship fund.
Shaw reported a 5-year contract with Pepsi was approved by the City Commission, which would generate as much as $180,000 revenue and product over the five years. The contract begins in 2004.
Roger told the Board the winter/spring brochure came out December 7th and he will serve as Festivals Committee Chair for the 2004 Sesquicentennial Commission.
Hecker reported on park projects including the Brook Creek gazebo and new playground equipment, restrooms at Holcom Park and plans for Clinton Park.
DeVictor indicated the Board will review a request for a proposed historical mural for the concrete walls of Municipal Stadium to consider but the person could not attend this meeting.
Staff thanked the Board for their support this year, a year of transition and reorganization with some budget reductions. Everyone came through to make it a successful year.
The Board was invited to the December 12th Department Holiday Luncheon where the annual Tom Wilkerson Teamwork Awards will be presented.
Due to the Kansas Recreation and Park Association conference conflicting with the January 13th date for the next meeting, the next meeting will be held Tuesday, January 20th.
Meeting adjourned at 1:15P.M.
